IFSCC Opens, Rediscovers Skin Beauty and Integrates Sensory Performance

The IFSCC Congress 2023, held in Barcelona, kicked off on Monday, Sept. 4, with an opening ceremony led by Camilla Casa (IFSCC vice president), who welcomed some 1,100 attendees and thanked event organizers.

Tony Gough (IFSCC president) announced the new IFSCC Fellows, and the Lester Conrad Education prize was presented to the Nigerian society.

The Madison G. De Navarre young scientist prizes were awarded for 2021 to Jin Hui Zuo, of Pechoin, and for 2023 to Marta Goncalves, of Sungkyunkwan University, Korea. Oriol Alcoba, director general of industry for the Catalonian government, then spoke about the importance of cosmetics to the region.

The evening wrapped up with a gastronomy cooking demonstration from chefs at Barcelona's own ":) is fru tar" restaurant, followed by cocktails and networking.

Rediscovering Skin Beauty 

The first full day of conferences started with a keynote talk from Prof. Paco Calvo, of the University of Murcia, who encouraged attendees to think differently and reach out to unfamiliar industries to gain new insights about their current work. He described plants as Planta Sapiens, acting as intelligent beings whose chemical production parallel behavior.

Following Calvo, in the Rediscovering Skin Beauty session, Joana Marto, of the University of Lisbon, described how the geography of 3D printed facial masks can influence efficacy. Also, Elsa Jungman, of HelloBiome, discussed how the microbiome defines skin types and described how to formulate accordingly. 

Also, Tsurumi Nao, of Kose Corp., presented a highly realistic 3D projection makeup system to try makeup on quickly and effectively. She referred to this as the next step up from augmented reality: mixed reality (MR).

Integrating Sensory Experiences into Beauty

In the afternoon, another conference session featured sensory experiences and integration into beauty. John Jiménez of Belcorp presented the afternoon keynote, demonstrating how sound and music can be used to enhance product experiences. He also projected scent could be used in cases of dementia and autism, to improve mental state.

Aline Robert-Hazotte, of Shiseido Group Europe Innovation Center, explored how emotions transmit through body odor, while Nur Huda Arif Indiarto described the impact of scented body wash on human emotion.

Hugo Alexandre Ferreira, of the University of Lisbon, presented the Stroop Effect and neural correlates of scent cognitive interference. He suggested that these observations could potentially be applied in studies of Alzheimers and the aging brain.

Finally, Celine Carrasco-Douroux, of Symrise, presented on the sleep regulating power of perfume after repeated use.

In addition, hundreds of posters were displayed, alongside a sold-out exhibition.
