Avon inventors have devised a way to make lip color more comfortable. Certain ester oils, such as ethylhexyl palmitate, provide a light, non-drying feel with a matte finish.
According to the patent, color cosmetics such as lipsticks, foundations and powders often are designed to impart a matte finish in order to hide fine lines and wrinkles (e.g., soft focus effects). Conventionally, matte cosmetics rely on a low emollient content to reduce shine and create a matte finish. Others use high levels of mattifying powders such as mica and talc.
However, reduced-emollient formulations are often perceived as drying and uncomfortable. The present invention therefore aims to provide a matte finish without compromising comfort.

As described, this invention relates generally to cosmetic compositions that impart a matte finish to human integuments; e.g., matte lip color cosmetics.
Specifically disclosed are compositions having a non-shiny, matte finish with a value of less than ~20, ~15, ~10, ~8 or ~6 gloss units when drawn down into films. The compositions also demonstrate desirable wear properties; for example, they do not feel heavy on the lips or dry like other matte cosmetics that rely on low emollient levels, e.g., < 10%, or high mattefying powder content, e.g., > 15% silica, mica, etc.
In particular, the inventors have discovered that low gloss lipsticks can be formulated with high—e.g., > 10%, > 12.5%, > 15%, etc.—levels of certain ester oils such as ethylhexyl palmitate, which surprisingly does not impair the matte finish to the degree observed with other ester oils commonly found in lipsticks. It also provides excellent emolliency.
The matte lipstick may further comprise one or more additional ester oils, such as isopropyl isostearate, capable of imparting emolliency. Such additional ester oils may be present in an amount, individually or collectively, from ~0.1-30% w/w; more typically from ~1-25% w/w. In some variations, the amount of ethylhexyl palmitate is greater than the amount of all other ester oils, alone or in combination, in the composition.
